Police officers and federal agents work together during a coordinated operation, reviewing documents and evidence linked to NDIS fraud investigations.

Operation Targets Criminal Gangs Allegedly Defrauding the NDIS

A major national operation is underway to protect NDIS participants from organised criminal activity. The Australian Government’s Fraud Fusion Taskforce is leading a coordinated effort against criminal groups who are allegedly responsible for large-scale fraud against the NDIS.

According to the NDIS website, these networks are suspected of lodging up to 50 million dollars in false claims, often for services that were never delivered. Some claims were allegedly made for participants who were incarcerated at the time, showing how serious the situation is.

Recent raids across Adelaide and Sydney involved the NDIA, Services Australia, the Australian Federal Police, and state law enforcement agencies. Evidence from these searches is now being assessed for possible criminal prosecution.

Three major NDIS investigations are currently underway:

Operation Banksia

Over 40 million dollars in alleged fraudulent NDIS claims for services that were never delivered, including claims for participants who were in custody at the time.

Operation Howell

More than 7 million dollars in alleged fraudulent claims submitted without providing any support to participants.

Operation Daewoo

More than 1.2 million dollars in alleged theft directly from participant plans.

The NDIS Commission has issued a notice of suspension and 12 notices of intention to refuse or revoke registration for individuals and providers linked to the investigations. More regulatory action is expected as the investigations continue.

The goal of the Fraud Fusion Taskforce is clear. Its work protects NDIS participants, helps maintain trust in the scheme, and reinforces that the NDIS will not tolerate people who attempt to misuse funding that is meant to support people with disability.

At DisabilityCo, we welcome efforts that strengthen safety, transparency, and accountability within the NDIS. A strong system helps participants feel secure, supported, and respected. We remain dedicated to providing care that is ethical, person-centred, and aligned with the highest standards of practice.
