Strengthening First Nations Leadership in the NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has launched consultation on a new initiative designed to strengthen First Nations leadership within the NDIS.
Called the First Nations Market and Sector Development Strategy, this plan aims to grow the number of Aboriginal disability providers and improve access to essential supports in local communities.
Currently, around eight per cent of NDIS participants are First Nations Australians, but there are far fewer First Nations-owned and operated disability service providers. This imbalance means many Indigenous participants face barriers when trying to access culturally safe care close to home.
The NDIA’s strategy recognises that real progress comes from within communities. By embedding First Nations expertise, experience, and leadership into provider organisations, the NDIS can deliver more inclusive disability support that reflects the diversity, culture, and values of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
As part of this consultation, the NDIA is inviting providers, participants, and the wider disability community to share their feedback. A discussion paper is now available on NDIS Engage, and roundtables will be held across Australia throughout November and December.
Senator Jenny McAllister, Minister for the NDIS, said it best:
“We know how important it is for First Nations Australians with disability to be able to access supports that truly meet their individual needs.”
At DisabilityCo, we welcome this commitment to inclusion, community voice, and genuine collaboration. Building a stronger network of Aboriginal-owned providers not only enhances trust and understanding but also ensures every participant can access supports that feel right for them.
Together, we can help shape a more connected, culturally respectful, and equitable NDIS for all.
