How Does NDIS Funding Work?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible individuals with disabilities to help them access essential supports and services. Understanding how NDIS funding works can help you make the most of your plan and achieve your goals.

NDIS Funding Categories

NDIS funding is divided into three main budget categories:

Core Supports 🏡

Core Supports help participants with daily activities and essential tasks. This funding is flexible, meaning you can allocate it as needed within this category. It covers:

Daily Personal Activities

Assistance with dressing, hygiene, and mobility

Transport

Travel to and from work, community activities, or appointments

Consumables

Everyday items such as continence aids or low-cost assistive technology

Assistance with Social & Community Participation

Support to engage in social activities and events

🔹 Flexibility: Core Support budgets offer more flexibility, but funds cannot be moved to other categories like Capacity Building or Capital Supports.

Capital Supports 🏠

Capital Supports cover investments in long-term disability-related items and home modifications. This funding is not flexible and must be used for pre-approved supports specified in your plan. It includes:

Assistive Technology

quipment such as wheelchairs, communication devices, or mobility aids

Home & Vehicle Modifications

Changes to improve accessibility and independence

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

Housing solutions for those with high support needs

🔹 Plan-Specific: Capital Supports are highly individualised and are only allocated for approved items.

Capacity Building Supports 📚

Capacity Building Supports help participants develop skills, gain independence, and work towards long-term goals. Unlike Core Supports, this funding must be used within specific categories outlined in the participant’s plan. It includes:

Support Coordination

Assistance with managing and understanding your NDIS plan

Improved Living Arrangements

Support with housing and independent living skills

Finding & Keeping a Job

Help with employment preparation and workplace support

Health & Wellbeing

Therapeutic services such as physiotherapy, exercise programs, and dietitian support

Increased Social & Community Participation

Assistance with building confidence and engaging in group activities

Improved Daily Living

Occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological support

🔹 Goal-Oriented: Capacity Building funding helps participants achieve greater independence over time.

Managing Your NDIS Plan 🤝

Once approved, you will work with an NDIS planner to create a personalised NDIS Plan. You can choose how to manage your funding:

Self-Managed

You handle payments and service agreements yourself

Plan-Managed

A registered plan manager helps manage payments and providers

NDIA-Managed

The NDIA handles payments directly to registered providers

Your plan will include budgets for Core Supports, Capacity Building, and Capital Supports tailored to your needs.
